Vegan Smash Burger with Fries and Swauce
20 mins prepServes 2
Sometimes you just need a burger! This recipe features Impossible Foods patties smashed with onions, melted vegan cheese, homemade fries, and a special 'swauce'.
For the Fries:
1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200°C).
2. Cut and wash your russet potato. Pat the potato pieces thoroughly dry.
3. In a bowl, combine the dried potatoes with 1 tbsp avocado oil, 2 tsp nutritional yeast, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp paprika, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well to ensure the potatoes are evenly coated.
4. Spread the seasoned potatoes in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet.
5. Cook for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
For the Swauce:
1. In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup vegan mayo or cashew cream, 1 tbsp ketchup, 2 tbsp relish, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp vegan Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper to taste.
2. Mix all ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
For the Burger:
1. Add 1-2 tbsp avocado oil to your cast iron skillet and heat it over medium-high heat.
2. Once heated, add the thinly sliced onion in two sections of the pan. Place your Impossible patties directly on top of the thinly sliced onions.
3. Smash the patties into the thinly sliced onions using a spatula. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Once the patties begin to brown, flip them.
5. While the patties cook, add the two thick onion slices (spears) to another section of the skillet to brown.
6. Once the patties are fully cooked through, top each with a slice of vegan cheese. Gently place one patty on top of the other.
7. Add 1 tbsp of water to the pan and immediately cover it. The steam will help melt the vegan cheese, which should take 1-2 minutes.
8. Once the cheese is melted, remove the burger. Top the burger patties with the browned thick onion slices.
9. Serve the burger immediately with the prepared fries and swauce.
